#15 The wind-up radio workout

One last post about wind-up radios. The manual for my Grundig FR200 (as featured on BSG) blithely instructs, “On the average, 60-90 seconds of vigorous cranking results in about 40-60 minutes of radio play at low volume.”

Let me just tell you, those are the longest 90 seconds of your life. That’s because it is resistance against the movement of the hand crank that generates the power that makes it run.

But your life might depend on the pirate radio news you get via radio after the cataclysm. So exercise number three of the Cataclysm Workout (click here for # one and here for # two) looks like this:

    Some CalArts folks and I once came up with the idea (over drinks, of course) of a gym where all the treadmills, stair-climbers, etc., would power the city. “But it would be populated with all these terrible guilty liberals,” my prof lamented. Better than shameless conservatives, we decided.
